METALLICA's LARS ULRICH Explains His Passion For Art
August 10, 2004METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich recently spoke to Launch Radio Networks about one of the most talked-about scenes in the new documentary, "Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster" — a sequence in which Lars auctions off his massive art collection for millions of dollars. Until now, not many fans have known about Ulrich's expensive hobby of buying original paintings by famous artists. He recently explained that his fascination for fine art goes back to his childhood. "You know, I grew up in a household full of music and art and somewhere up through, I don't know, late Eighties, early Nineties, I just started rediscovering a lot of those roots. And what happened was it kind of became a sanctuary for me away from METALLICA. It really was my thing away from the rest of the METALLICA guys and it just became just a great passion."
METALLICA frontman James Hetfield was said to be "embarrassed" by the scene of a steadily drinking Ulrich attending the auction of his collection in New York City.
